Professor Dr. Hilmi Mukhtar

Deputy Vice Chancellor and professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (Malaysia)

 

Prof. Dr Hilmi Mukhtar received his B.Eng in Chemical Engineering from University of Wales Swansea, United Kingdom in 1990. He then continued his MSc and PhD at the same university and completed his studies in 1991 and 1995, respectively. He has vast experience in teaching, research, consultancy and administration. His research expertise is in membrane technology covering synthesizing various membranes materials, characterization, modelling and also applications for acid gases removal and wastewater treatment. He is currently serving as the Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

In administration, he is recently holding the post of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic). Previously he was holding number of management positions including the Registrar, the Dean of Faculty of Engineering, the Director of Transformation, the Director of Undergraduate Studies as well as the Head of Chemical Engineering.

In research, he has been participating in many research projects funded by Ministry of Innovation Malaysia (MOSTI), Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Petroleum Research Fund (PRF) and University Internal Research Fund. He has graduated more than 20 postgraduate students and many more on- going candidature. He has published more than 150 papers in journals, seminars, conference proceedings and bulletins at the national and international levels.

In consultancy, he has the expertise in designing teaching and research laboratories as well as equipment. He has eight (8) file patents to Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).

Currently, he is also the Malaysian Qualification Agency panel for accreditation of national academic programs and serves as reviewer for number of international journals. He holds the fellow of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and Charted Engineer (CEng), United Kingdom.

 

 

 

Prof. Dr. William Hogland

Linnaeus University, Sweden

 Prof. Hogland became active in the field of Civil engineering (environmental engineering) back in 1978 when he completed his Master studies in the field of Civil Engineering in LTH/LU. He presented his doctoral thesis: "Rural and Urban Water Budgets" - A description and characterization of different parts of the water budgets with special emphasis on combined overflows, at Lund University, Sweden, in 1986.

In 1988, Hogland became a research leader at Waste Management and Recovery Division, Department of Water Resources Engineering at Lund University. Since then, Dr. Hogland has been a member of several national and international committees in both Urban Hydrology and Waste Management.

In 1989, Hogland presided as the chairman of the working group and liaison activities for Bioenergy Agreement on MSW, in the International Energy Agency (IEA). He has experience of teaching and research in over 50 countries, and has been invited as a guest speaker at universities in 18 countries, among them Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Thailand, Tunisia and USA. Since 1994, the research has mainly been directed to system analysis of waste management in industries and municipalities, natural systems for wastewater treatment and river catchments analyses.

Hogland has published more than 400 reports and research articles. He has also written textbooks and produced videos in the area of hydrology and waste management. Hogland has also been employed as a lecturer and supervisor in several international courses in the area of water resources and waste management in developing countries. Hogland was the organizer of several international conferences such as “Latin American – Swedish Seminar on Waste Management” in Rio de Janeiro (1995), Brazil; “Kalmar Eco-Tech” in Kalmar (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2010), Sweden; the Youth Environmental Science Forum - EcoBaltica, St. Petersburg, Russia (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2013).

From 1997 to 1999, Hogland was an Acting Professor of Technical Environmental Science at the Department of Technology, University of Kalmar. In 1999, he was awarded the Chair of Environmental Engineering at the Department of Technology, Kalmar University. In 2000, he became the Head of the Department of Technology and also the Chairman of the Baltic Test Team at GIWA/UNEP (Global International Waters Assessment) conducting Assessment Protocol Testing and a representative of GIWA in the Core Group of the GEF Baltic Sea Regional Project (BSRP).

During 2001 and 2002, William Hogland intensified his international research and education cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region, South East Asia and Latin America. In 2002, he became a member of the European Chemistry Thematic Network and has established the International Network on Sustainable Leachate and Waste Water Management Using High-Tech and Natural Systems. Since 2001 he is the mentor/reviewer for the Swedish International Cooperation Agency (Sida) in their programme “Asian regional Research Programme on Environmental Technology (ARRPET)”, which involves 20 national research institutes in 8 Asian Countries.

A dominating part of Hogland’s recent research has been within the KK-research programme at Kalmar University, “Industrial Development for a Sustainable Society – with emphasis on processes and Automated Systems for Recycling and Reuse”. Since 2002 he is the Chairman of the Baltic Sea Network for leachate and wastewater treatment with emphasis on high-tech in combination with nature based systems and since 2004 he is the Chairman of the Baltic Sea Region-Ukrainian network on bioremediation and treatment of leachate from landfills with emphasis on persistent organic compounds. During recent years, he has increased work inside the University as a member of the Board of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering and the Committee of the Research Education and profile work for Life and Environment, just to name a few. Beside treatment of leachate from landfills and storage of waste fuels by baling technique, his research has been focused on the new areas namely soil remediation with phyto-methods and artificial wetlands as well as integrated industrial water management. Hogland´s research interest has broadened in the area of waste management economics. In 2007, he got his second professor title in Eco-Technology with Focus on Innovation Systems at Mid Sweden University, where he worked until August 2008. In 2008, he also became Editor-in-Chief of the Open Waste Management Journal.

In 2010, William Hogland became Professor of Environmental Engineering and Recovery, at the School of Natural Sciences, Linnaeus University, Campus Kalmar, Sweden and Guest Professor at Beihua University in China. During 2015 he got the Elsevier Atlas Award for “Research for a Better World” in competation with about 50 000 other research papers selected among  Elseviers 2 500 journals. In 2017 his research project “Integrated approach for Industrial Wastewater and Stormwater Management in Wood-Industry Sector Phases I and II” got the honorable Sweden Impact Award 2017 in the category “Physical Sciences&Engineering” 12-13 June in Stockholm 2017.

 

 

 

 

Prof. Dr. Ghasem D. Najafpour

 

Chairman of Biotechnology Research Group, Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology, Iran

 

Professor Ghasem D. Najafpour is a distinguished professor in Chemical Engineering and Chairman of Biotechnology Research Center, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology, Iran. He is an educated scholar from University of Arkansas, USA with strong background in biological processes. He is deeply involved in research and teaching in biochemical engineering subjects and he has conducted many practical researches in enzyme technology, fermentation processes, biodiesel, biofuel, biosurfactant, wastewater treatment and biochemical engineering.

He is a Chemical Engineer and Biotechnologist, B.Sc., Medical Technology University of Isfahan, Iran (1972), M.Sc., Chemical Engineering University of Oklahoma, USA (1977) and Ph.D., Chemical Engineering University of Arkansas, USA (1983). He served as assistant professor at University of Mazandran, Iran (1983-1989). Visiting Professor at University of Waterloo Canada and University of Arkansas, USA (1990-1991). He also spent his sabbatical leave at University of Arkansas, USA (1992-1993). There, he has expanded his scientific research activities on single cell protein (SCP), Microbial fuel cells, renewable energy and synthetic fuels. He served as associate professor at University of Mazandaran, Iran, (1994-1998) and Universiti of Sains Malaysia, Malaysia (1998 – 2005). Since 2005, he was qualified and appointed as professor in Faculty of Chemical Engineering at Babol Noshirvani University of Technology, Iran.

Since 2008, he is serving as Editor in Chief of International Journal of Engineering, World Applied Sciences Journal, and Middle East Journal of Scientific Research. He is also Editor in Chief of Iranica Journal of Energy and Environment since 2006. In addition, he is Editor of Journal of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology, Academic Journals, since 2007. He is an active member of many international institutes, editor and reviewers of number of international journals and many scientific societies. Often he is invited to many international conferences as keynote speakers.

In past decades, he has supervised more than 165 master and 38 Ph.D. students. He has published more than 450 papers in international journals and has written 10 books in the field of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. In year 2006, he has published his 1st edition of his book with Elsevier entitled "Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology". The 2nd edition of "Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology" with 20 chapters is published by Elsevier on Feb. 2015.

A few times, he has been awarded and appointed by the Ministry of High Education of Iran as the best and top researcher in Iranian Universities. He won number of awards for research achievements and winner of gold medal for the Invention/Innovation sponsored by Ministry of Science, Technology Malaysia, 2004. His researches for formulation of transparent soap and natural biodegradable liquid detergent from palm oil’s fatty acids, was patented with SIRIM Berhad, Malaysia (2003). Currently, he is supervising number of PhD scholars and conducting top research projects on microbial fuel cells, biodiesel biohydrogen, biodiesel, biofuel from algae, bioethanol from agro-wastes, enzyme technology, renewable energy, heterogeneous catalytic processes, wastewater treatment and biological treatment processes.

 

 

 

Prof. Dr. Mohsen Jahanshahi

 

Dean of Nanotechnology Research Institute, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology, Iran

 

Mohsen Jahanshahi received a B.Sc. Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Shiraz University, in 1995, and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering - Process Design from TMU University, Iran in 1997. Then he was awarded a scholarship for the PhD study in (Nano)Bioprocess Engineering and received the degree from The University of Birmingham, UK. In 2003 he joined Babol Noshirvani University of Technology, Iran and since 2008 he is the Dean of Nanotechnology Research Institute. However, from 2012 he is full professor of Chemical Engineering - Nanobiotechnology with focusing on, Nanobiotechnology, Nanobioseparation, Nano-Membrane Technology, Water Purification and Environment Issues.

 In addition, since 2016, he is Head of National Elites Foundation in Mazandaran province (North of Iran).

He has received many National and International academic awards and honours so far in Nanotechnology, Nanobiotechnology and Environmental Technology, such as; Nominated as best Science based Company in “From Science to Application” Iran International Festival (2015), Selected as best Researcher in 15th Iran Research & Technology Week Festival (2014), Best Nanotechnologist Award winner in 8th Iran-Nano International Festival (2013), Winner of National Research & Technology Prize from presidency (2013), Selected as best Researcher in 13th Iran Research & Technology Week Festival (2012), Selected as best Researcher in 11th Iran Research& Technology Week Festival (2010), Nominated as distinguished Nanotechnology Researcher in Iran by Iranian Nanotechnology Society (2005-2006-2007-2009), etc.

Since 2016, he is serving as Funder and Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Water and Environmental Nanotechnology (www.jwent.net). . He is also Editor of Desalination and Water Treatment Journal, since 2014.

Publication of more than 300 papers in international peer reviewed journals, 15 books as author and translator, more than 50 lectures in universities and companies in, UK, India, Holland, USA, France, Singapore, Spain, Malaysia, Germany, China, Pakistan, UEA, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Indonesia, Norway, Italy…, and Iran have made his academic career up to now.

 

 

 

Prof. Dr. Fariborz Nateghi-A

 

International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology, Tehrān

 

Fariborz Nateghi-A, Ph.D, P.E, S.E / He was born in Tehran, Iran in 1959. He finished elementary school in Farmanieh elementary school and high school in kharazmi high school in Tehran. He then continued his education in the United States of America for his graduate and post graduates studies. He finished his undergraduate studies with top Dean’s honors list in only three years in 1980 from the University of Missouri-Columbia and continued with his graduate works under the supervision of Late Professor Henry Liu, the father of inventions in US and received his MS and Ph.D. with top honors from UMC in 1988. During 1980 till 1988 he acted as a teaching assistant, research assistant and research engineer at UMC and as lecturer at Lincoln University, USA. Since 1988 till 1991 he worked as a design engineer in Shakti Consultants and Group 12 Engineers in Los Angles, California on residential and commercial structures with emphases on the seismic retrofit of structures. In 1991 he joined the Civil Engineering Faculty of Sharif University in Tehran, Iran, while working jointly for the establishment of the International Institute of seismology and earthquake Engineering (IIEES), a joint venture with the UNESCO in Iran.

Later then, He became the director for the research and development of IIEES from 1993. He received several post doctorial diplomas from ISSIZ, Former Yugoslavia, Oxford University and Crown Field University in England and University of Wisconsin in US in seismic retrofit of structures and disaster managent. He was recognized as the distinguished professor of earthquake engineering and disaster management in Iran by the ministry of higher education in 2006. He has received many national and international awards. He was the principal investigators for more than 95 national projects in seismic retrofitting of major structures and lifelines as well as disaster management at the highest national level. He was the former Iranian president of Earthquake Associations as well as many national committee chairman. He has published more than 52 books, more than 550 papers and 76 design manuals. He is currently, professor at IIEES. His main interests are, seismic design and retrofit of structures, disaster management and risk reduction in built environments.
